Up in the mountains of Virginia, the clouds have been perpetually following the Liberty students to and from classes, meals, and convocation causing slips, falls, and ruined shoes. The past couple of mornings have been more tortuous than usual as I wake up and have to ask myself, “What should I wear today?” Not “What do I want to wear?,” but “What SHOULD I wear?” I only have a few pairs of shoes that can withstand puddles and red mud. I must also weigh the option of peacoats or puffy coats. I thought I had finally made it through the days of black clouds and gold flats. I looked forward to wearing blue satin shoes and a skirt until the torrential downpour last night. According to the weatherman, there was only a small chance of rain today. I guess that was because there was none left after last night. But this morning, I was unsure. It seemed dark and rainy at 7:15 this morning. Go figure. Though unsure and self-conscious, I opted for a sweater, jeans, and rainboots. It drizzled a little bit on the way to my first class, but by 9:30 when I emerged from the classroom building, the sun was shining and the ground was drying. I felt ridiculous! There weren’t any optimal opportunities to change, so I suffered through walking around campus looking like I was waiting for a storm while the majority of sane people dressed appropriately. Suddenly, the UGG boots looked appealing. I seriously thought about asking my roommate to trade shoes with me after convocation. Thankfully, I did ask her to take my umbrella back to the dorm. Oh, did I forget to mention that? Yes, I was extremely prepared for the bottom to fall out. I really should have been a girl scout. I searched for people who looked worse than I did. I usually do that anyway, but I was more intentional in my efforts. There were other people wearing rainboots and my shoes squeaked for joy whenever I saw them. I wanted to yell, “Look at them! They don’t look like a freak! They can dress themselves.” Perhaps I should hang out with Cape Girl now. We can be a super hero team: Cape Girl and Rain Woman! Or I can just trust the weatherman. As I sit in my sunny dorm in a t-shirt and no rainboots, I’m thankful to learn that looking cute should always be a priority. Practicality, move out of the way!
